Each month we’ll bring you a note from one of our therapists. It might be something they’re reading, learning or just something they want to share.
This month’s note is from Blake Hardy PT, DPT, OCS:
Recently, I’ve been noticing the limitations of common diagnoses. Patients come in with common syndromes assigned to their pain like IT Band Syndrome or Piriformis Syndrome because it’s easy to assign these types of diagnoses. The patient points to a spot that hurts, the clinician can touch it and it’s tender. Case closed! But not so fast…there is more to the story.
Understanding why those areas are tight, tender and painful is the key to resolving them. Where we diverge from the typical clinician is that we like to look deeper and understand a more comprehensive pattern that caused this and instead, intervene at the first link in the chain that started these events. So a pain in your knee might actually be stemming from tight hip flexors!
