Each month we’ll bring you a note from one of our therapists. It might be something they’re reading, learning or just something they want to share.
This month’s note is from Alicia Fisher, PT, DPT:
Over the last several months I have been focusing on improving my sleeping habits. With a 3-year-old at home, I found myself not having the most restful nights at times and wanted to be able to improve this if I could. I found the book, Breath by James Nestor, to be very beneficial. Something as simple as to focus on my breathing patterns has impacted my ability to fall asleep quicker, as well as obtain a more restful sleep. Things I have been working on are inhaling and exhaling through my nose, as well as emphasizing full exhalation in order to improve my ability to inhale.
Your ability to breathe has an impact on anxiety levels, blood pressure, HR and overall well-being. If you are someone that struggles with sleep I challenge you to start working on improving your breathing patterns.
