Breathing Re-Education

BREATHING RE-EDUCATION

WHY DO I NEED BREATHING SUPPORT?

Dysfunctional breathing, or a breathing pattern that deviates from optimal is a concerning issue in our modern world. Studies have found that 50% or more of the general population exhibits some form of dysfunctional breathing. Breathing challenges can result in a range of issues, including breathlessness, anxiety, heart and lung diseases, increased vulnerability to infections, and more. Breathing re-education stands out as a vital approach to addressing this worrisome trend. By addressing the root causes of dysfunctional breathing we can formulate an individualized approach that empowers our patients to regain control of their breath, promoting better health and overall wellness.

WHAT DOES A BREATHING APPOINTMENT LOOK LIKE?

Sessions are always performed in a private treatment area where a skilled physical therapist assesses what aspects of breathing re-education would benefit you most. Most sessions start with testing different aspects of breathing and performing different interventions to improve results.  Interventions may include guided breathing, stretching, manual therapy, and craniosacral therapy depending on what is appropriate for your case. We will also include at home exercises to continue your progress at home.

My journey at Core Physical Therapy in West Des Moines, Iowa, wasn’t just about recovering from my total knee replacement surgery; it was about rediscovering my core strength and resilience. And honestly, I couldn’t have done it without the incredible staff, especially Blake Hardy.
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a wave of friendly faces and genuine warmth. The atmosphere was bright and welcoming, putting me at ease immediately. But the true star of the show was Blake. His expertise and knowledge were impressive, but it was his compassion and encouragement that truly set him apart.
Blake tailored my physical therapy plan specifically to my needs and goals. He never pushed me beyond my limits, but he always challenged me to reach my full potential. His unwavering belief in me, even when I doubted myself, was a cornerstone of my recovery.
His sessions were never monotonous. Blake incorporated a variety of techniques and exercises that kept things engaging and effective. He explained everything clearly and patiently, ensuring I understood the purpose of each exercise and how it contributed to my progress.
But beyond the physical, Blake understood the emotional and mental toll of surgery. He was a great listener, offering support and a sense of humor that kept my spirits high throughout the process. He celebrated my small victories and helped me navigate setbacks with optimism and perseverance.
Thanks to Blake and the amazing team at Core Physical Therapy, I’m stronger and more mobile than I ever thought possible after my knee surgery. I walk with confidence, and my knee feels better than ever.

Five stars, hands down!

Jacob was very helpful and easy to work with. He helped me understand how the way I was breathing was contributing to my anxiety, causing me to have shortness of breath, and making me feel congested. He gave me some easy exercises to do to improve my breathing habits, and even after doing them for just a week or two, I was already able to see improvements! I started feeling less congested, better able to take full breaths, and my anxiety was getting better too. I had always thought that my anxiety was causing my shortness of breath, but he explained how my shortness of breath was actually what was causing much of my anxiety, which is why these exercises helped. He also answered any questions I had along the way and explained and demonstrated everything well, so I made sure I was doing the exercises properly to get the most out of them. I’m grateful for Jacob’s help and the improvements I’m already seeing, and I look forward to continuing with what I’ve learned to keep improving even more.

I have been working with Jacob on breathing retraining. I have noticed my performance during football practices has been better and I am able to get through workouts without as much shortness of breath. I also feel like I can control my body and my emotions better which is giving me an edge that not many people have on the field.

Caleb

Working with Jacob on breath work and body awareness has been very helpful. I struggle with anxiety so learning about how to control my body’s stress responses has been an enormous help. I would strongly recommend making an appointment at Core Physical Therapy if you are looking for a way to improve overall mental health.

Greg

I have been working with Jacob for about 6 months. I began the program to help with fatigue and sleep schedule. Since starting, I have seen improvements in my energy level and overall mental health. I have primarily been focusing on breathing, nutrition, and mobility. I have also seen improvements in the duration of my workouts, and sleep schedule.
